BY THE END OF the 1720's the King Charles XII of Swedish was dead. The land was ruined. A large part of the male population was dead or kept as enslaved prisoners in Russia. The Swedish era of Great Power was ended - thus not always in the minds of the Swedes, or our neigbours. Despite its fame, however, Sweden lacked manpower or financial means to match its reputation.
To put the nation back on its feet there were a general understanding that industrialization was necessary and capital for the necessary investments was sought everywhere. The Swedish Minister of Finance, Goertz, formed a secret agreement with the pirates at Madagascar, to trade gold and armed ships against nationalization as Swedes. Due to several unfortunate events this interesting solution never came to be. One important financial source would instead become the Swedish East India Company. The 14th of June 1731 a trade monopoly - an octroy - was granted to Niklas Sahlgren, Colin Campbell and the Swedish finance brooker Henric König.
His partners were the Scottish Nobleman Colin Campbell and the Gothenburg business man Niklas Sahlgren. The charter which gave a monopoly on all trade East of India was granted for a period of 15 years. The charter was printed and announced. Below is the text in its entiety. In its own way an excellent description of what was to follow.
