I am a Tranchell descendent who is anxiously awaiting the rebuilding of the Gotheborg ship and it's launch. I have family from all over the world that wants to be there also. We plan to stay at the old castle formerly owned by Carl Tranchell. Please keep me informed as to the progress. Thank you for keeping this site up and running. It's very exciting.

While I am not a collector, I was trying to identify a tea set that had been in the family for 50 years. In less than a day, Jan-Erik responded to my inquiry and helped me to identify the blue dragonware with geisha. Thanks!

This site is educational, very helpful, and put together as well as I've seen. It helps everyone; school children, collectors and the citizens who have created it. What a great idea, doing something (free of charge) to help other people, and enjoying it.

Thank you so much for your advice. Now I have some leads. Do you know of any specialists in Alberta, Canada. My 81 year old friend who owns the dishes would like to pass them on to an Oriental family who would appreciate them. Please contact me if you know of a Canadian appraiser.

We have a set of Oriental dishes, porcelin I believe. three different sizes of coffee pots When you hold up a tea cup to the light you can see an image of a woman's. Someone said it's Madame Chang. I think she is a geisha. My friend is 81 and the set came to her from her father-in-law who had purchased it off an oriental man who had just come to Canada on the boats and needed cash. She is interested in selling this set to an oriental family who would appreciate it. Any ideas on who made this set. It is very ornate. It looks like it as little beads all over it as an accent. Any help would be appreciated.

I can't believe how quickly I received a response to my question! After years of unsuccessfully searching for assistance in identifying my tea set, I finally have at least a starting point. I am most impressed with both the site and the dedication of Jan-Erik. Thank you so much!

Thanks for your website and enthusiasm! I have a specific question that I would like help with from anyone who is knowledgable. I recently bought a beautiful Chinese 18th C bowl on eBay from a dealer in Utrecht (cleij). I noticed that it is the same as one of the plates shown in the book on the ship "Goteborg", which sank in 1745 and was excavated 240 years later. See the first book shown on this website; it is the first plate (bowl) shown. It has a blue and white design with flowers and vines, and a brown glazed underside. I bought the bowl because it reminds me of the classic Royal Copenhagen pattern "Muselmalet" (cherry blossum or "blue fluted" in English), which originated about 1800. Although the Danish pattern is more complex, the affinity is clear. Could the Chinese pattern (or some European pattern that was the basis for it) be the inspiration for the "Muselmalet" pattern? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks

Jan-Eriks enthusiasm for this project is amazing. I have sent messages to him at all times of the day and night and have received a reply, and, I might add not just a short courteous reply within a few hours. Does the man sleep? By the way is anyone else out there interested in themes on transitional porcelain? As I have more questions than answers at the moment.

This is a very informative web site, in particular for collectors. I have a large collection of Kraak porcelain which I have acquired over a period of over 20 years. Since I lived in Southeast Asia all these years I was at the source of such ware, especially in Indonesia. My collection is partly featured in Rinaldi's book about Kraak Porcelain. If anyone should require specific advise on late Ming Export Ware, I would be happy to assist and correspond. I am glad a Swede took the intiative to launch this Web Site. What about the Dutch, who were involved in the trade 130 years earlier? They would have an even a longer history to talk about the subject. The Portuguese, of course, would beat everybody else, but are there any collectors from Portugal on the Web? I hope to be able to talk to many collectors thanks to this Web Site. I am not a current collector of chinese porcelain, however in the past I came to know that it was lucky to have a collection of crab plates and that crab plates came in a set of 5. Each plate being about the size of a bread and butter plate. From the start of collection, the first plate has one crab design on it and subsequent plates the extra crab, adding up to 5 crabs on a plate. I am missing the 2 crab plate only. I dont know the history of these plates, year, value etc, yet even though I have posed this question, questions, still unanswered, thats okay, I guess. I can't send pictures of these plates which I have because I dont have a scanner to do so. I appreciate being included in your mail and thank you for thinking of me. Maybe sometime down the track, as we Australians would say, I will be able to send you photos and maybe get more information. Best Wishes Dianne

It was a very lucky day for me when I stumbled into Jan-Erik's site. In a few months, he has become a trusted friend as well as an invaluable source of information about Chinese ceramics. Our immensely enjoyable correspondence has enriched my life in many ways. It's helped me avoid some expensive mistakes, and it continues to teach me a great deal about the subject -- and, most of all, it's great deal of fun!

I am a dealer and collector of antique collectables for over 20 years, dealing in artifacts from Indonesia. Over the last 5 years I've noticed an alarming number of reproductions coming out of that country. A lot of Sung Pottery, and cannons. Are there any points you can give me on how to separate the reproductions fron the originals? Most look new and I know of pieces that have ended up in the USA, and the experts there say they are %100 original. Regards David Gonzales.

Dear friends and collectors of oriental art. There is nothing that adds so much to the pleasure and value of any collection as knowledge of whatever you are collecting. Some more or less collect just "knowledge" and the pieces becomes just mementoes in a lifelong search for understanding. Whatever your interest are in the field of western contacts with the eastern mysteries of art and culture I hope you will in some way use this site as a part of your own network, and find a way of helping other to add to their knowledge. If you are a collector, consider signing up in our free mailing list.
