Original charter of the Swedish East India Company given in 1731
Ex: JE Nilsson Collection
BY THE END OF the 1720's the King Charles XII of Swedish was dead. The nation was ruined. A large part of the male population had fallen on the battlefield or was kept as enslaved prisoners in Russia. The Swedish era of Great Power was over thus not always over in the minds of the Swedes, or our actually in that of our neighbours'.
However, despite its fame Sweden lacked manpower or financial means to match its reputation.
To put the nation back on its feet there were a general understanding that industrialization was necessary and capital for the necessary investments was sought everywhere. The Swedish Minister of Finance, Goertz, did something as exotic as to form a secret agreement with the pirates of Madagascar to trade gold and armed ships against nationalization as Swedes. Due to several unfortunate events including the beheading of the finance minister himself, this interesting solution never came to be.
One important source to both capital and knowledge would instead become the Swedish East India Company. The 14th of June 1731 a trade monopoly - an octroy - was granted to Niklas Sahlgren, Colin Campbell and the Swedish finance man of German descent Henric König.
His partners were the Scottish Nobleman Colin Campbell and the Gothenburg business man Niklas Sahlgren. The charter which gave a monopoly for all trade 'East of India' was granted for a period of 15 years. The charter was printed and announced in several languages.
Below is the text in its entirety. In its own way an excellent description of what was to follow.
