The Gotheborg Antique Chinese and Japanese Ceramics collector's help and information Board
The Gotheborg Forum and related web pages were started in December 1998 to continue the tradition of scholarly generosity set by my own friend and mentor, Prof. em Dr. Bo Gyllensvard (Director of Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm 1959-1981. Curator of Gustaf VI Adolf Asian Collection 1955-1973), by creating a place where collectors and specialists alike, could combine our understanding of our various areas, which takes years of actual handling to acquire, into one big knowledge resource. Here, a global community of collectors and specialists can share our understanding of Antique Asian Ceramic Art, while passing on this hard-to-acquire material knowledge to beginners, students and friends alike.

The fundamental idea is to encourage learning and mutual help in an increasingly difficult field, while putting all commercial considerations aside.

With the help of many thousand contributing members, our Forum has from its founding in April 23, 2003, grown into a large and much appreciated collector's resource. In our archive there are more than 35,000 pages and more than 350 000 posts and images filed and accessible under some 80 different topics, from Neolithic times to the 21th century. This offers an incomparable repository for your own research into almost all possible aspects of Asian Ceramic Art and its authentication. The best way to start any quest for information is usually to first try our SEARCH link (top right on all pages), before posting a question to the Board.

But please post your question anyway. We are all here to learn and have fun.

No user data can be accessed by any outside actors. All user data are confidential and no advertising is allowed. To keep this forum online we therefore depend on a modest membership fee. Voluntary donations towards an optional listing as a Sponsors is appreciated but not necessary. Here are our board rules - policies, participation and privacy. Click here to sign up or renew your Membership.

The road to learning should be traveled in good company.
Welcome!

Jan-Erik Nilsson

Gotheborg Forum Rules, Policies, Participation and Privacy
The purpose of this Asian Ceramic Art Collectors Community and Forum is to help each other, teach beginners and pass on the hard to gain practical knowledge on how to authenticate genuine Asian antique ceramics. This material knowledge is more complicated than the plain Asian Arts History, since it addresses the actual authenticity of specific items and not only if they are "in the style of". We do this by encouraging experienced collectors to clap together our various expert knowledge and thus forming a formidable knowledge resource while at the same time enjoying our own collections. Summary: 1. Ask when you need, 2. Help when you can, 3. No business.

Discussions on Shapes
The shape of a piece is probably the most important clue to the identification of an item with regard to its authenticity and period. This category is for the discussion on the uniqueness (not just the shape of course) of a particular kind of ware that has been produced throughout a significant period of time in the history of Chinese ceramics like meiping; yuhuchun jar; ginger jar, Gu etc.
