Bi disc

Bi disc, Han dynasty

A jade bi disc, Western Han dynasty

Carved jade disc with a hole in the center, used for ritualistic or emblematic purposes. The earliest examples are undecorated and date from the Neolithic age (10,000 BC onward), while later examples become more highly decorated. Although not known for sure, they are assumed to represent symbols of the sun or heaven.
