GLOSSARY

Korea

Korea was a colony of Japan from 1905-1945, the Korean language was made illegal in the 30's to be replaced by Japanese, and many older Koreans speak Japanese to the contempt of younger nationalists but by reason of economics Japanese remains a popular second language, more easily and commonly spoken than English. The under-30 generation is inspired by Japanese music and fashion despite their schooling. There is an amazing sameness to the bulk of celadons being made in Korea which shows little innovation or creativity in design, shape and colour; just row after row of crackled celadon with the seemingly mandatory cranes or small florals with red centers.
