GLOSSARY

Zisha

("Purple clay") A type of clay from Yixing, Jiangsu Province, China. Purple clay is not necessarily purple in color. It is used in teapots and other pottery produced in the Yixing region, and is said to have qualities that enhance the flavor of tea. The high content of metallic oxides in the clay body resulted in wares ranging from purple to beige or green, the variation in color being caused by differences in kiln temperatures and kiln atmospheres.
