GLOSSARY

Leather hard

A state of a clay which has been allowed to dry for around one day. The clay item can be handled and worked on without leaving finger prints but is soft enough to bend. When a thrown but unfired clay pot is at this stage during the production, the potter can refine the pot's shape by turning, adding handles and spouts, decorating the clay by carving, impressing or engraving or by adding spriggs and slips etc.
