GLOSSARY

Paneling, shapes and borders in porcelain

Chinese porcelain intended for or ordered from, the west often shows a variety of paneling and borders in their shapes and decorations.

As often is the case in western decorative art these ornamental designs was inspired by architecture and the proportions of the architrave, column and base in the classical column orders.

The use of panel mouldings in interiors has waxed and waned over the centuries, becoming quite prominent during the late 1700s with Robert Adam's brilliant reinterpretation of classical motifs. Panel moulding also includes the 'S' and 'C' curves, identified with the exuberant period of the Rococo when panels and borders became quite extravagant.
