Nephrite

Nephrite is a compact, fibrous mineral and the more common, less valuable of the two stones traditionally grouped under the name “jade”.

It is a calcium–magnesium silicate with exceptional toughness and a soft, waxy luster, and it was the material most often used for jade carvings in ancient China.

Although nephrite and jadeite are both called “jade”, they differ in chemical composition, texture, and value. Nephrite is typically chosen for its durability and rich green tones, while jadeite, which is rarer and usually more expensive, can display a wider range of bright colors.

Nephrite occurs in shades from pure white (“mutton-fat” jade) through yellowish or grey-green to dark green or nearly black.
